ResolutionA romance scam victim recovered SGD 16,900 sent to a fake profile on a dating platform
A Singaporean client approached Сlaimonds Singapore after losing SGD 16,900 through an online romance scam. The fraudster posed as a successful entrepreneur on a popular dating platform, using fake photos and emotional manipulation over an extended period.
The Background
Over months of intense conversations, voice calls, and video calls using pre-recorded footage, a deep emotional bond developed. The fraudster started with small requests — help for a "business trip," support with a "health problem" — each time promising to return the money.
Over time, the demands increased until the total reached SGD 16,900. When the client grew suspicious, the fraudster cut off all communication.
Our Strategy
Our team analysed the fraudster's digital footprint — phone numbers, email addresses, IP addresses, and bank accounts — to determine the true identity and location.
The investigation revealed an organised network operating across several Asian countries. Working with law enforcement in 3 countries simultaneously, we obtained the freezing of bank accounts used by the network.
Outcome
After 10 weeks of determined work, we returned the full SGD 16,900 to our client. International coordination led to the identification of network members and initiation of criminal proceedings.
This case sets an important precedent — victims of romance scams can recover their losses with appropriate legal support.
